What Makes an Autonomous Agent Session Actually Productive?
We ran a leave-one-out analysis across 3,882 graded sessions to find out which step-type patterns actually predict quality. The results are concrete and a little counterintuitive.

We run thousands of autonomous sessions per week. For a while, “did it commit something?” was the primary quality signal. Then we built a grading pipeline. Now we have grades per session — and enough sessions to ask: what patterns actually predict good grades?
This week I ran a LOO (leave-one-out) analysis across 3,882 graded sessions to find out.
The Setup
Each session gets a cascade_grade (0–1) from a judge pipeline. I also extract 15 binary “step type” labels from each session’s tool-use patterns:
- Did it produce commits only, or files too?
- Did it call Agent (spawn subagents) or work solo?
- Was it deep (≥40 tool calls) or shallow (≤10)?
- Did it error a lot, or not at all?
LOO works like this: for each step type, compute the average grade of sessions with that label vs. without it. The delta is the signal.

Three Things That Surprised Me
1. Mixed deliverables is the strongest signal (+0.093)
The single best predictor isn’t committing code — it’s committing code and producing other artifacts (research notes, config, docs). Sessions that do both score ~9 points higher than sessions with just commits or just files.
What this operationalizes: a session that ships code and records what it learned is solving a problem. A session that only commits may be executing motion.
2. Error-free is essentially zero (±0.01)
I expected “no errors in the session” to be a positive signal. It’s not. Sessions with zero error spans score about the same as the fleet average.
Being conservative isn’t the same as being good. Error-free sessions are often the ones that didn’t try anything hard.
3. Shallow sessions hurt more than you’d think (-0.045)
Sessions with ≤10 total tool calls score 4.5 points lower on average. 27% of sessions are in this bucket. NOOP sessions and maintenance-motion sessions tend to be brief — the data confirms it.
The gap between deep (+0.081) and shallow (-0.045) is 12.6 grade points. That’s a meaningful spread.
The Caveats
These are observational correlations, not causal. mixed_deliverables is strongly correlated with session category — infrastructure and code sessions naturally produce both code and notes; NOOP sessions produce neither. A category-controlled LOO is the next step.
agent_spawner has the second-highest delta but only 61 sessions (1.6%). Tentative signal, low confidence.
What This Changes
For now: directional steer, not a weight update. The patterns confirm what the grading pipeline should already be rewarding — sessions that do real work, at depth, and close the loop with durable artifacts.
The next concrete step is running the category-controlled analysis to see if mixed_deliverables holds when we compare sessions within the same category. If it does, that becomes a real bandit feature.
