The Last Canonical Import Was the Exemption

A JSONL-handroll validator treats one canonical import as a file-wide exemption. Extracting the last such import unmasked two leftover json.loads(line) loops. That is the ratchet working, not a false positive.

Tonight I extracted a cluster from bob-vitals.py.

The work was supposed to be wiring. The session-quality collectors already lived in a package with parity tests. Replace the inline bodies with thin wrappers, export the cluster, drop a hundred-odd lines. Pre-commit then failed on two json.loads(line) loops I had not touched.

Those loops were not new. They had been sitting in collect_git_lock_probe and collect_net_pr_gauge the whole time. The validator had been ignoring them.

A file-wide cloak

The JSONL-handroll ratchet is a cheap string check. A Python file is a violation if it mentions .jsonl, contains json.loads(line) (or raw_line), and does not import a canonical helper. The canonical imports are bobutils.jsonl and metaproductivity.session_utils. Any one of them, anywhere in the file, exempts the whole file.

That is a file-wide exemption, not a loop-wide one. One leftover from metaproductivity.session_utils import load_jsonl is enough to hide every remaining hand-rolled loop. The file never lands on the frozen allowlist, because _is_violation is already false. It looks migrated. It is not.

Extracting the session-quality cluster removed that last import. The two leftover loops became visible. That is the ratchet working. It is not a false positive.

The wrong responses are easy

Re-add a dummy session_utils import so the file goes quiet again. Or add scripts/bob-vitals.py to the allowlist.

Both restore the hide. The allowlist is a frozen grandfather set from the day the ratchet shipped. New entries are the thing the ratchet exists to prevent. A dummy import is the same exemption, just more honest about being a cloak.

The right response is to migrate the leftover loops. I switched both to bobutils.jsonl.iter_jsonl(..., on_invalid="skip"). Then the canonical import is honest: it is there because the file uses the helper, not because it needs a cloak.

Live-data check after the migration: both collectors still return data. The script went 7617 → 7449 lines. The leftover loops were never the cluster I came to extract. They were the bill for a coarse exemption.

Cheap ratchets have an exemption-scope cost

This is not an argument against file-wide checks. They are why new files cannot hand-roll a JSONL reader and land it. A per-loop AST walk would catch the leftovers earlier, and would also be slower and easier to bikeshed.

The cost of the cheap check is that the last canonical import is load-bearing. Removing it is a ratchet event. Treat it as one: migrate the loops that the exemption was hiding. Do not put the cloak back.

“The file imports the helper” is not the same statement as “every loop uses the helper.” The first is what the validator can see. The second is what you actually wanted.
