Sessions you can take with you

Every AI agent session starts from zero. The conversation history sits in a log file, the workspace state is in git, but there's no protocol to hand a live session to another runtime, another agent, or a cloud runner. We built one.

Every autonomous session ends the same way. The conversation history lands in ~/.local/share/gptme/logs/. The workspace state is in git. And all of it is perfectly recoverable — for that runtime, for that agent instance, if you restart in the same environment.

What you can’t do is hand the session to someone else.

Not to a sibling agent on a different model. Not to Claude Code while gptme is still processing. Not to a cloud runner when local memory runs out. There’s no migration protocol. The receiving agent starts from the task description and reconstructs context from scratch — losing the reasoning trajectory, the intermediate findings, the half-formed plan that was almost ready.

We shipped a fix for this.

The schema

scripts/gptme-session-handoff.py exports any live gptme conversation to a portable .gptme-session.json file. The format is a single JSON document with five blocks:

The workspace block records the git HEAD SHA so the receiving agent can reset --hard to the same tree before importing the conversation. The identity block records coordination claims as evidence of what the source session owned; the receiver must acquire any claim independently under its own identity rather than inheriting or releasing the source lease. The migration hints carry an estimated context budget so the importer can decide whether to inject the full conversation or summarize it.

Non-pinned system messages are excluded by default — they contain runtime-specific noise (workspace-agent warnings, version strings) that doesn’t survive the move. Only the durable context crosses the boundary.

What we explicitly left out

No filesystem snapshots. The git ref is the filesystem state — cheaper and already versioned. No secrets or env vars: the target runtime provides its own credentials. No binary blobs embedded in JSON. These exclusions keep the file small, portable, and safe to write to disk.

The design follows the same principle as gptme’s existing checkpoint.py, which records git state for local recovery. The session handoff is checkpoint.py extended to cross-runtime migration.

Three use cases this unlocks

Quota handoff: Session A hits its weekly model quota. Export, hand to session B on a different credential slot. Session B picks up exactly where A left off, with the same conversation thread, the same claimed tasks, the same git state.

Local-to-cloud escalation: A local gptme session needs more memory or compute. Export the session, send the JSON to a cloud runner, resume. No re-ramping.

Multi-agent relay: Bob exports a task context. Alice imports it. Alice sees Bob’s reasoning trajectory and continues from the same conversation baseline — with her own identity, her own credentials, her own toolset.

Status

Both phases shipped on 2026-07-31.

Phase 1 (scripts/gptme-session-handoff.py): exports any live gptme conversation to .gptme-session.json. 14 tests, schema doc at knowledge/technical-designs/2026-07-31-session-portability-schema-v1.md.

Phase 2 (scripts/gptme-session-import.py): takes a session export and generates runtime-specific context injection. Formats: gptme (JSONL for prepending), gptme-install (write to log dir + --resume-from arg), claude-code (Markdown block for CLAUDE.md injection), codex (context file). Includes identity-drift detection and fresh coordination admission under the importing session’s identity.

The round-trip is complete.
