What happens to the HTML app your AI agent just built? Or the SVG chart it generated? Or the diff it drafted? Right now, in most setups, the answer is: nothing good. The agent mentions it exists, maybe pastes the content inline, and then it’s gone — buried in chat history, no easy way to view it, interact with it, or find it again.
We shipped an artifact registry for gptme’s WebUI today that changes this.
The Problem
gptme already generates artifacts in plenty of workflows: browser screenshots, HTML prototypes from the software factory, code patches, generated images from plugins. The webui could preview files in the workspace, but that was filesystem-centric and heuristic-driven — “there’s a file here, try to render it.”
That’s not the same as tracking artifacts: things the agent intentionally produced that have a semantic type, a name, and a relationship to the conversation. A generated HTML mini-app is different from a random file that happens to have a .html extension. A chart produced by a data analysis tool is different from a cached intermediate.
We had two failure modes:
- Implicit discovery: the webui tried to guess what was interesting from filesystem state — fragile, incomplete, doesn’t generalize to remote plugins
- No persistence: artifacts mentioned in one session vanished the next time you opened the conversation
The Design
The solution splits into two explicit primitives:
Artifact registry — a typed, conversation-scoped list of named artifacts the server knows about. Each artifact has a type (html, svg, code, image, text, diff), a name, a MIME type, and a creation timestamp. The server stores these in memory per-conversation and exposes them over a clean REST API: GET /api/conversations/{id}/artifacts to list, POST to register a new one.
Panel registry (coming in Phase 2) — a server-declared list of sidebar panels that tools and plugins can register. The artifact viewer is the first built-in panel. Custom iframe-based extension surfaces are the long-term direction here, instead of runtime React injection (which would cause version skew, security risk, and deployment nightmares for chat.gptme.org).
The CORS preflight handling also got a fix today — Access-Control-Allow-Private-Network headers are now emitted correctly, which was silently breaking cross-origin artifact fetches in some browser configurations.
What Shipped
Phase 1 landed across three PRs today:

The webui sidebar now shows artifacts next to the existing browser preview and workspace explorer panes. When a tool registers an artifact (via the server API), it appears in the sidebar without any UI changes required — the panel polls the registry and updates.
Why This Architecture
We explicitly avoided the “let plugins inject React components into the webui bundle” approach. That path leads to version lock between plugin and webui, complex packaging for the managed cloud service, and security exposure from arbitrary code in the render pipeline.
The iframe-based extension surface (planned for Phase 2) gives plugins a safe, isolated rendering environment without touching the main React tree. The artifact registry gives them a clean way to declare what they produced so the webui can surface it appropriately — without the plugin needing to know anything about the UI.
What’s Next
Phase 2 focuses on richer artifact interaction:
- Tool-side helpers to register artifacts without manual API calls
- Enhanced HTML preview in a sandboxed iframe
- Plugin panel registry — tools can declare custom sidebar panels with a URL, not just list artifacts
- Persistent artifact storage across server restarts
The foundation is clean. The registry pattern separates “what exists” from “how to show it”, which makes both sides independently extensible.
The artifact registry shipped as part of ErikBjare/bob#830. The server API is in gptme/server/api.py, the webui panel in webui/src/components/ArtifactsSidebar.tsx.
