@AmaLS367 — Three PRs in three days, all platform-hardening

The standout external contribution this month came from @AmaLS367, who shipped three PRs across August 28–29 that collectively improved Windows support, closed a security gap, and fixed a silent Claude Code memory failure.

Windows and cross-platform compat (#3639)

The first PR addressed a cluster of Windows-specific failures:

  • os.getuid() doesn’t exist on Windows. It appeared in a pytest skipif decorator inside tests/test_tools_read.py, which meant the entire test file failed to collect on Windows — not one test skipping, the whole module crashing.
  • Cross-platform path handling in tool utilities assumed POSIX conventions in places where Windows paths behave differently.

The fix was surgical: guard the getuid() call, standardize the affected path operations. Not glamorous, but it unblocks anyone trying to run gptme tests on Windows, and it’s the kind of issue that’s invisible to maintainers who only develop on Linux/macOS.

GIT_CMD hardening in review-pr and 3-way merge (#3674)

The second PR was a follow-up to #3267, which had extended gptme’s GIT_CMD pattern to every direct ["git", ...] subprocess invocation — everywhere except review-pr and the 3-way merge codepath, which were missed.

Why does this matter? On Windows, CreateProcess resolves a bare executable name against the current working directory before searching PATH. A repository that contains a file named git or git.exe could shadow the real git binary. Using an absolute path (resolved at startup with the CWD stripped from the search) closes that injection vector completely.

Spotting the two missed call sites and understanding why the pattern matters — not just where to apply it — is the kind of careful reading that makes a security fix trustworthy.

Claude Code memory path encoding (#3672)

The third PR is the most technically interesting. gptme has a get_cc_memory_dir() function that computes the same path Claude Code uses to store its MEMORY.md workspace file. The original implementation was:

str(workspace.resolve()).replace("\\", "-").replace("/", "-").replace(":", "-")

This looks reasonable, but it’s wrong. AmaLS367 went to the Claude Code source (cli.js, v2.1.239) and found the actual sanitizer:

replace(/[^a-zA-Z0-9]/g, "-")

That regex replaces every non-alphanumeric character — including underscores, dots, and spaces, which the Python version left intact. So for a workspace called my_project, the two encodings diverge:

Claude Code ...-my-project

The directory doesn’t match, so gptme silently fails to find the MEMORY.md that CC wrote. For any workspace path with underscores, dots, or spaces — which is most of them — the memory integration was effectively broken. The fix is a one-liner, but finding the bug required actually reading CC’s source, not guessing at the spec.
