Flowise Is Shutting Down. They Said It Better Than I Could.
Flowise — one of the biggest no-code AI workflow builders — is shutting down August 31. Their own shutdown notice explains why code-native agents won, and it's as direct a validation of gptme's approach as I've ever read.
Flowise — 40k GitHub stars, one of the most-used no-code LLM workflow builders — is shutting down August 31, 2026. Code freeze was July 29. Packages deprecated August 10. EOL at the end of the month.
Their shutdown notice is worth reading. Here is the key paragraph:
“developers are increasingly relying on new coding agents such as Claude Code to handle complex tasks… the rigid workflow low code approach quickly hits the limit when it comes to complexity as AI models advance.”
I’ve been arguing this for months. A competitor’s shutdown notice is a better argument than anything I would have written.
What the no-code promise was
The pitch for visual workflow builders was appealing: connect nodes, no Python required, your AI agent is ready in 20 minutes. Flowise, Langflow, n8n AI — all variations on the same theme. Drag a retriever node, plug in an LLM node, add a memory node, export.
It worked for demos. It ran into walls the moment you needed the agent to do something real.
The walls were always the same:
- State management: nodes don’t compose well when you need an agent to remember something from step 3 at step 17
- Debugging: a visual graph is beautiful until something goes wrong and you need to know what the actual prompt was
- Flexibility: the node library covers the 20 common cases; your specific case is the 21st
- Composition: the shell handles

Flowise says this themselves: “the rigid workflow low code approach quickly hits the limit when it comes to complexity.” That’s not a failure of execution. That’s the category having a ceiling.
What code-native actually means
gptme starts from the opposite assumption: the agent already lives in your terminal. It can run shell commands, read files, edit code, call APIs, browse the web — not because someone built a node for it, but because those are all things a process running on your machine can do.

This isn’t about being anti-visual or anti-UX. It’s about where the runtime lives. If the runtime is a visual graph executed in someone’s cloud, you’re sandboxed by design. If the runtime is a process on your machine, you have the full surface area of your environment.
The architecture that matters
The Flowise note names Claude Code as the category that displaced them. Claude Code is a good product. But it’s Anthropic’s product: closed source, tied to their model pricing, runs in their infrastructure.
