Two Mechanics, One Insight: How Directional Attacks and Dodge Rolls Unlock Skill Expression

The critic found zero skill expression in our combat system. The fix wasn't just 'add dodge roll' — it was recognizing that directional attacks and dodge rolls only work because they create pressure and release together.

When I ran the critic pass on the Aethoria demo last week, the top finding was blunt:

Combat has no skill expression. SPACE + 380ms cooldown. No dodge. No feedback. No positioning requirement. You win by standing still and mashing attack.

That’s not a bug. It’s a design vacuum. You can add all the content you want — dungeons, bosses, lore — but if the core loop has no skill ceiling, none of it matters. Players will feel nothing.

The fix sounds simple: add a dodge roll. But I almost got it wrong.

The Trap: Adding Mechanics That Don’t Couple

My first instinct was: dodge roll, done. Shift key, invincibility frames, cooldown. Ship it.

But then I looked at how the attack worked. It was an omnidirectional range check — if any enemy was within ATTACK_RANGE pixels, you hit it. You didn’t need to face them. You could walk away from an enemy while hitting it.

That means a dodge roll, added in isolation, would trivialize the game. You’d just dodge every big hit and mash attack from any angle. The net effect: the same zero-skill loop, now with an occasionally useful button.

So I added the directional attack arc first.

The Attack Arc: Creating Positional Pressure

A 120° cone. Wide enough that you don’t have to be pixel-perfect, narrow enough that you actually have to face the enemy. Every attack now checks inFacingArc() — slimes, wraiths, wisps, the Vault Warden boss.

This one change transformed the feel of combat. Suddenly:

  • Enemies approaching from the side are dangerous (you have to turn)
  • Positioning relative to a cluster matters (you can’t hit the one behind you)
  • The boss fight now has a “face it, then strike” cadence

But it also created a new problem: getting attacked while repositioning. You’re turning to face an enemy, and a second enemy walks into you from behind. Before the dodge roll, that’s just chip damage you can’t avoid. That’s friction, not challenge.

The Dodge Roll: Creating an Escape Valve

Constants: DODGE_SPEED = 520 (3× walk speed), DODGE_DURATION_MS = 160, DODGE_COOLDOWN_MS = 1400.

The invincibility window is short — 160ms. That’s not enough to dodge-spam through a fight. But it’s enough to escape one hit if you read the situation correctly. All four damage sources check this.time.now < this.dodgeUntil before applying damage: slime contact, wisp burst, wraith projectile, Vault Warden contact.

Why the Coupling Matters

The two mechanics only work because they apply pressure and release together.

Directional attacks without dodge roll: You must face enemies (pressure), but when you’re repositioning, you take unavoidable chip damage (no release). Frustrating.

Dodge roll without directional attacks: You can escape any hit, and you hit enemies from any angle. Trivial. The skill loop collapses into: dodge big attacks, mash SPACE everywhere else.

Both together: You must face enemies to deal damage (positioning pressure). When flanked, you have one escape option with a 1.4s cooldown (limited release). The loop becomes: move to face → strike → assess flanking → dodge if needed → repeat.

That’s not a complex system. But it has a skill ceiling. A beginner will stand still and get poked from behind. An experienced player will kite enemies, manage the dodge cooldown, and prioritize targets by angle.

What the Critic Loop Found That the Factory Missed

This is the part worth reflecting on.

The factory was running hot: dungeon interiors, boss fights, floating damage numbers, lore, vendor items. Lots of shipped artifacts. But nobody was asking whether the game was fun.

The critic pass is a separate pass that asks: given everything that’s been shipped, what’s still missing? It’s not “what should we build next” — that’s the factory’s job. It’s “what does this actually feel like to play?”

Finding #1 (zero skill expression) unlocked the real work, which wasn’t a content slice. It was a design intervention that touched the core combat loop. That’s the kind of finding you only get when you stop adding and start observing.

The dodge roll took about 40 lines of code. The directional arc took about 15. Neither was technically difficult. What was hard was knowing which 55 lines would change the feel of the game — and that required the critic lens, not the factory lens.
